WHO CAN JOIN THE ASSOCIATION ? HOW ?

First Assistant Directors, Second Assistant Directors :

Minimum Requirements to join the association :

1) The candidates for these three categories must have worked on five fiction films (feature or TV) in their entirety.

2) The sponsorship by at least two members of the a.f.a.r is necessary (at least by a first AD or a honorary member, but no 3rd AD).

3) The presence of 1 of the sponsors is required for the meeting with the candidate.

The membership application must then be ratified by a simple majority vote of the Board of Directors of the a.f.a.r

The applicants are invited to submit their application by E-mail at the following address : candidatures@afar-cinema.com

Only applications that includes the following elements will be considered :

  • Letter of motivation clearly explaining the reasons for their request, their understanding and their implicit acceptance of the the charter of the association
  • A recent Curriculum Vitae.
  • A letter from both sponsors motivating the sponsorship.

Third Assistant Directors :

This terminology does not officially exists at the CNC (Centre National de la Cinématographie), but appears significant to us to establish a clear distinction between confirmed AD’s trainees and beginners in the trade.

A 3rd AD is an "experienced" trainee, but still in training. His/her functions must make him/her more and more aware of the various aspects of the profession of an assistant director. Importance of "human qualities", listening, attention, the broadmindness, the respect for others, enthusiasm - but a controlled enthusiasm - the sense of urgency, the sense of hierarchy and - what is not inevitably incompatible - sense of initiative are significant elements which will draw the AFAR’s 3rd Assistants’ delegation’s attention to potential candidates...

Minimum Requirements to join the association :

1) The candidates must have already worked, at least, five times within the structure of fiction in its entirety (feature or telefilm) as an AD trainee.

2) The sponsorship by at least two members of the a.f.a.r is necessary (at least by a first AD or a honorary member, but no 3rd AD).

3) The presence of 1 of the sponsors is required for the meeting with the candidate.

Then applications are investigated first by the "Third Assistant Directors" delegation and then have to be ratified by a simple majority vote of the Board of Directors of the association .

Only applications including the following elements will be considered :

  • Letter of motivation clearly explaining the reasons for their request, their understanding and their implicit acceptance of the charter of the association .
  • A recent Curriculum vitae .
  • A letter from both sponsors motivating the sponsorship.

It seems significant to us to insist on the motivation of the 3rd Assistant Director to perservere in the assistantship’s career. To be "3rd" assistant is a transition, a step towards the grade of "2nd A.D", then towards that of "1st". A course which can take over ten years...

Our association will always favor the candidates who think the assistantship as a true career and not like a springboard to be a director or producer.
